WineWorks Marlton

Opened in 2010, WineWorks is the premier retail destination in southern New Jersey for wine. They are big enough to have everything but strive to be a niche establishment that supports small family-owned operations.

It’s all about the French word *“terroir” for owner Filippo Cammarata, who enjoys the opportunity to travel and learn about different cultures through the world of wines. He is a big proponent of an operation who makes a recipe correctly based on the region of the world they’re in. Each bottle, whether it wine or beer, should reflect where it comes from and be true to what it is, not what people want it to be.

His support of small production families is reflective of the way he runs the store. The team at WineWorks understands the market and is big on the little things, which makes a huge difference in the customer experience. Product knowledge sets them apart and keeps them ahead of the competition.

Heady Times recently popped in and sat down with Filippo to learn more about their drive to be fresh and current while remaining true to their roots.

Heady Times (HT): What is instrumental to your success?

Filippo Cammarata (FC): I credit my management staff. We have a huge store, and there are times I don’t ever step into the beer aisle, for example, because of the incredible guys I have running that side of the operation. These guys are beer manager Ryan Fitzpatrick (Fitz) and assistant beer manager Dom Schiavo.

HT: How do you keep the store fresh?

FC: We visit a lot of retail stores around the country to help make us that much better. We’ve traveled to Florida, Maryland, Delaware, and New York with the understanding that we’re South Jersey, and some things need to be circumvent. These days we’re into lighting and recently changed to LED lights. It brightens up the place and is the first thing you notice when you come in. Our take is that if the store is bright and clean, you shop a little longer and enjoy your experience even better. We’re always looking to change and come up with fresh ideas for products.

HT: You have some great touches throughout the store. What can customers expect during their visit?

FC: We have a tasting every hour of every day we’re open. We have a wine tasting machine with the option to try 4 out of 24 wines during a visit. We hope that the sampling machine introduces the customer to something new, and they’re then motivated to buy.

We have a 3-minute chiller if a customer comes in requesting a cold bottle. We have a cheese counter, and the option for beer-lovers to make their own 6-pack.

*terroir- the combination of factors including soil, climate, and sunlight that gives wine grapes their distinctive character.
